Former President Donald Trump is at the center of a legal storm, facing potential jail time for contempt of court after violating a gag order in his criminal trial.

A report by Newsweek on Thursday, May 2, 2024, revealed that Judge Juan Merchan fined Trump $9,000 for breaching the gag order by posting messages attacking jurors and witnesses on his Truth Social media platform and campaign website.

Responding to these violations, Judge Merchan warned Trump of possible incarceration, stating that he would impose “an incarceratory punishment” if necessary.

The development sparked reactions from various quarters, with CNN Anchor Kaitlan Collins highlighting Judge Merchan’s frustration with the $1,000 fine limit for Trump’s infractions and suggesting that jail might be necessary punishment.

Mary Trump, Trump’s estranged niece, also weighed in, indicating that Trump could be in jail by the weekend.

Trump’s legal woes stem from 34 felony counts related to falsifying business records concerning hush money payments made to Stormy Daniels, an issue linked to the 2016 election.

Although Trump pleaded not guilty, prosecutors assert that the payments were an unlawful attempt to influence the election. Judge Merchan found Trump in contempt for nine violations of the gag order and ordered the removal of the offending posts.

Trump responded defiantly, accusing Merchan of bias and election rigging on Truth Social.

While Tuesday’s posts may not immediately lead to jail time, Trump could face further consequences for additional violations. Prosecutors have identified four more potential breaches, with a hearing scheduled to address these statements.

Trump’s legal battles extend to the Supreme Court, where arguments continue regarding his claims of presidential immunity in relation to federal charges of election interference.
