Donald Trump has filed a formal legal complaint against Britain’s Labour Party, accusing them of potential foreign interference in the U.S. election. The complaint stems from reports that nearly 100 Labour Party aides have traveled to the United States to support Kamala Harris in her presidential campaign ahead of the November 5 election.

The controversy erupted when a Labour staffer posted on LinkedIn about the large group of party officials crossing the Atlantic to assist U.S. Democrats in key swing states. Although Labour claims it is not funding the travel or accommodation for these volunteers, concerns have been raised about whether their involvement complies with U.S. federal election laws. These laws strictly prohibit foreign volunteers from spending more than $1,000 on campaigning efforts.

Trump’s legal team, led by campaign lawyer Gary Lawkowski, questioned the validity of Labour’s claims. The letter sent to the Federal Election Commission (FEC) suggested that the LinkedIn post hinted at Labour possibly covering costs for the activists, which could breach U.S. regulations.

“Those searching for foreign interference in our elections need to look no further than [the] LinkedIn post. The interference is occurring in plain sight,” Lawkowski wrote, demanding an immediate investigation into the matter.

Drawing historical comparisons, Lawkowski added, “This past week marked the 243rd anniversary of the surrender of British forces at the Battle of Yorktown, a military victory that ensured the United States would be politically independent of Great Britain. It appears that the Labour Party and the Harris for President campaign have forgotten the message.”

The close collaboration between the U.K.’s Labour Party and U.S. Democrats has been an ongoing point of concern, with reports highlighting coordinated efforts between center-left think tanks in both Washington and London aimed at boosting their respective electoral chances. However, the U.K. government has stated that the Labour activists are participating in the U.S. campaign in a personal capacity and that their involvement does not reflect the official position of the government.

As of now, the Labour Party has yet to issue a formal response to the allegations. The Trump campaign is pressing for a thorough FEC investigation to determine whether any violations of U.S. election laws have occurred, keeping a close eye on any potential impact this may have on the upcoming election.
