Former President Donald Trump appeared to doze off during a recent campaign event in Michigan, igniting fresh criticism from Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign. The incident occurred at a roundtable discussion in Oakland County, where Trump closed his eyes as a community member spoke about local educational issues. This moment of drowsiness came amidst reports of Trump’s exhausting campaign schedule and a series of canceled interviews, which his advisors attributed to his “exhausted” state.

During the Oakland County event, Trump highlighted his busy campaign schedule, jokingly asking attendees, “You think this is an easy life I have, right?” This comment underscored the pressures he faces as he campaigns for the presidency once again. Just hours after the roundtable, Trump was slated to hold a rally in Detroit, which lasted approximately an hour and a half.

Criticism from Harris’s campaign was swift, labeling Trump as an “exhausted” candidate. This sentiment reflects growing concerns about Trump’s stamina and mental acuity as the election approaches. Reports indicated that Trump canceled multiple interviews earlier in the week, with an adviser citing his exhaustion as the reason. Politico noted that producers were informed Trump was “exhausted and refusing some interviews, but that could change.”

In addition to these concerns, Trump’s rally in Detroit was marred by technical difficulties. For about 20 minutes, Trump’s microphone cut out, leaving him unable to speak to the audience. In his characteristic style, Trump remarked that he would not “pay the bill” for the company managing the microphones, suggesting it would make for an amusing story about him.

Polling data shows that Harris leads Trump by two percentage points in Michigan, according to a recent Wall Street Journal poll, while Trump had a slight edge in an earlier Quinnipiac poll. These fluctuations in poll numbers demonstrate the competitiveness of the race in this crucial swing state.

Trump, now 78, is the oldest candidate running for president and would be the oldest to assume office if elected. His past public appearances have raised questions about his mental sharpness, especially after he seemed to nod off during his hush money trial earlier this year. The former president has resisted calls to disclose his medical records, maintaining that he performed well on an unspecified cognitive test.

In contrast, Harris recently released her own medical report, criticizing Trump for not doing the same. She suggested that his lack of transparency indicates he may be “too weak and unstable to lead America.” Since Harris surged in polls back in August, Trump has increased the frequency of his campaign events, with an unnamed adviser humorously describing this strategy as “Trump on steroids.”

As the campaign progresses, both candidates are facing scrutiny regarding their health and stamina, which could prove pivotal in the battle for the presidency. With Trump’s recent drowsiness and Harris’s growing momentum, the race is shaping up to be a closely watched contest.
