Donald Trump’s latest tariff battle with Canada could leave over 1.5 million U.S. homes in the dark as tensions reach a boiling point. Ontario’s Premier, Doug Ford, has issued a stark warning—if Trump escalates tariffs on Canadian goods, he’s ready to hike electricity costs by 25% or even shut off power completely to multiple U.S. states.
The standoff comes as Trump pushes for hefty new tariffs, including a staggering 250% levy on Canadian dairy and lumber. Despite delaying some tariffs until April, the former president’s aggressive stance has outraged Canadian leaders, sparking threats of retaliation that could have devastating consequences for American households.
Canada Hits Back: Power Grid at Risk
Ontario currently supplies electricity to U.S. states like Michigan, Minnesota, and New York. If Ford follows through on his warning, millions of Americans could see their power bills skyrocket—or worse, lose electricity altogether.
“If the United States escalates, I will not hesitate to shut the electricity off completely,” Ford declared, making it clear that Canada will not be bullied into submission. He emphasized that while he regrets the impact on American families, the responsibility lies squarely on Trump.
Economic Fallout Looms
Experts warn that a full-scale trade war between the U.S. and Canada could have disastrous effects, plunging Canada into a recession while also hitting American consumers hard. Prices for essential goods like fuel, cars, and construction materials could surge, while job losses could ripple across both nations.
Trump, however, remains defiant. Taking to Truth Social, he fired back:
“Because our Tariffs are reciprocal, we’ll just get it all back on April 2. Canada is a Tariff abuser, and always has been. We don’t need your Cars, we don’t need your Lumber, we don’t need your Energy, and very soon, you will find that out. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!”
With both sides digging in, the stakes have never been higher. If Canada follows through on its threat, the fallout could be felt in American households within weeks.
