Liz Plank, author of For the Love of Men: A Vision for Mindful Masculinity, took to MSNBC to analyze Trump’s approach to masculinity, highlighting what she sees as a reliance on traditional gender stereotypes rather than genuine masculine qualities.
During the interview, Plank argued that Trump’s image of masculinity is more of a façade than a reflection of real strength. “This is a guy who spends more time with his makeup artist than with his advisors,” she noted, suggesting that Trump’s carefully curated appearance contrasts sharply with his often touted “tough guy” persona. This distinction, she argued, reveals a version of masculinity that’s closer to showmanship than substance.
Plank’s critique wasn’t just about aesthetics. She emphasized that authentic masculinity doesn’t shy away from strong women. “Masculine men aren’t afraid to debate women or have a meltdown on stage when questioned,” she said. According to Plank, true masculinity involves respecting and uplifting women, a quality she believes is lacking in Trump’s public approach.
Vice President Kamala Harris also came into the conversation, particularly regarding her outreach to male supporters, contrasted with Trump’s strategy. Plank noted that Harris and her running mate, Tim Walz, embody a style of leadership that embraces their masculinity without exploiting it, in contrast to what she describes as Trump’s more divisive approach.
Plank closed her argument by connecting Trump’s policies to the theme of masculinity, especially regarding women’s rights. “Masculine men actually protect women. They don’t enact abortion bans that endanger women,” she stated, emphasizing that true strength, in her view, is about protecting, not controlling.
