An update from Georgia, efforts by GOP activists and Trump loyalists to investigate Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger over the 2020 election have hit a roadblock. The Georgia State Election Board, in a recent development reported by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, deadlocked on the investigation with a 2-2 vote, falling short of the majority required.
The board has now unanimously decided to seek clarification from the General Assembly regarding its authority to oversee Raffensperger, a Republican who certified the 2020 vote count. Despite a vocal crowd of Republicans at the Capitol meeting, the bid to investigate Raffensperger reflects an ongoing desire to reexamine the previous presidential election. It’s worth noting that multiple investigations have debunked fraud allegations, and three separate vote counts confirmed Democrat Joe Biden’s victory over Trump by approximately 12,000 votes in Georgia.
Raffensperger, a conservative Republican holding the top election official position in the state, faced intense pressure from Republican activists striving to block the certification of President Joe Biden’s win. Notably, former President Trump personally called Raffensperger, urging him to find 11,000 votes to secure victory in Georgia. This act is now part of criminal charges against Trump in Fulton County.
Continuing the pressure, Lt. Gov. Burt Jones, a Trump loyalist and vocal Raffensperger critic, has been actively opposing him. Jones, who served as one of the fake Trump electors in 2020, has launched advertisements attacking Raffensperger, though some ads have faced criticism for errors, such as providing the wrong contact number for complaints.
