In a striking commentary, Geraldo Rivera, a former Fox News host and erstwhile Trump supporter, expressed his belief that Donald Trump’s recent rally at Madison Square Garden will be seen as the pivotal moment that derailed his 2024 presidential campaign. Rivera shared his thoughts during an appearance on CNN’s The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer, stating, “I think it will be famous for ending President Trump’s meteoric campaign to be reelected.”
Rivera’s critique followed a controversial performance by comedian Tony Hinchcliffe at the rally. Hinchcliffe faced immediate backlash after calling Puerto Rico a “floating island of garbage” and making other racially charged jokes aimed at various ethnic groups. Rivera, appalled by Hinchcliffe’s comments, remarked, “How dare he? A floating island of garbage?” He emphasized that such remarks are indicative of Trump’s broader xenophobic rhetoric, including past statements claiming that migrants “poison the blood” of America and suggesting that those who commit crimes introduce “bad genes” into the country.
“There is no reason a Latino American should vote for Donald Trump,” Rivera declared. He argued that Trump has disqualified himself through his association with hateful rhetoric, saying, “These racist remarks have divided this nation. They’ve made people feel embattled and worried about their future.” Rivera’s strong stance highlights a growing concern among voters about the impact of such divisive language on society.
Rivera’s frustrations did not stop there. He characterized Trump’s remarks as “hate speech” rather than politics and expressed his determination to distance himself from such sentiments. “I have had it,” he stated emphatically.
Madison Square Garden, known for hosting significant events, might now be remembered for its association with Trump’s campaign turning point. Rivera predicted that upcoming polls would reflect this shift, stating, “This was the time, this was the moment where things turned on Donald Trump.”
In a passionate response to Hinchcliffe’s remarks, Rivera urged Latino Americans to take pride in their heritage and reject Trump’s candidacy. He wrote on social media, “F–k these racists. A vote for Trump is a vote against self-respect.”
In the wake of the backlash, Hinchcliffe attempted to defend his comments, claiming they were misinterpreted and taken out of context. “These people have no sense of humor,” he tweeted, expressing frustration over the reaction from political figures, including vice presidential candidates.
The Trump campaign quickly distanced itself from Hinchcliffe’s remarks. Senior advisor Danielle Alvarez stated, “This joke does not reflect the views of President Trump or the campaign.” In a rally the following day, Trump’s running mate, Ohio Senator JD Vance, remarked that while he had not heard the joke, people need to stop being overly offended by every comment. “Maybe it’s a stupid, racist joke. Maybe it is not,” he said, urging a more tolerant attitude towards humor.
