Ongoing defamation trial brought forth by E Jean Carroll against Donald Trump in a New York court, proceedings were abruptly halted on Monday. The former president, expected to testify, faced a delay due to concerns regarding potential exposure to Covid-19 affecting both the jury and the defense team.

Alina Habba, Mr. Trump’s attorney, requested the court to reconvene on Wednesday, a day following the New Hampshire presidential primary election. This request, however, met opposition from Ms. Carroll’s legal representatives. During the proceedings, Ms. Habba informed the judge that she was not feeling well and was seated without a face covering next to her client. Additionally, a juror reported feeling hot and nauseous.

Responding to these health concerns, US District Judge Lewis Kaplan agreed to postpone the hearing until Wednesday morning. The jury’s primary task is to deliberate on the extent of additional compensation the defendant, Donald Trump, must pay. This comes after a previous ruling found him liable for sexually assaulting Ms. Carroll in a department store dressing room in 1996, resulting in a $5 million award to the retired magazine columnist.
