Tensions are reaching a boiling point as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has outright dismissed former U.S. President Donald Trump’s eye-opening proposal for Ukraine to repay the staggering $182 billion in aid provided by the Biden administration. In a firm statement, Zelensky made it clear: A grant is not a debt.
The financial support, which includes military, humanitarian, and economic assistance, has been a crucial lifeline for Ukraine since Russia’s full-scale invasion began. According to the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, the U.S. has allocated approximately $119.8 billion since 2022. However, only a fraction—about $4 billion—was structured as loans, with repayments deferred until 2065.
Trump’s unexpected proposal suggests that Ukraine compensate for the aid by granting the U.S. control over its vast natural resources, including its oil, gas, and mineral reserves. This plan would involve a U.S.-led joint investment fund overseeing these valuable assets.
