From The Dispatch on June 18, 2024, a report addressed the viral social media claims suggesting that this year’s National Day of Prayer was either not held in the U.S. Capitol or had been canceled. One Facebook post asserted that 2024 marked the first time in 70 years without prayer in the Capitol. Another claim from 2021 alleged that “President Joe Biden has the audacity to cancel National Prayer Day at the White House.”
However, these claims are factually incorrect.
The National Day of Prayer organization (NDP) confirmed that a formal observance took place on May 2 in the U.S. Capitol Congressional Auditorium. Amy Parks, the NDP’s communications director, clarified via email, “We invited Congress and congressional staffers to attend and join in prayer. The Congressional Observance was recorded and shared with the nation through our 2024 National Day of Prayer Broadcast.”
Despite challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021, the NDP adapted by hosting virtual events or moving the formal observation to various historically significant locations across Washington D.C. In 2020, they reached millions of American homes through a virtual National Observance broadcast. Similarly, in 2021, the event took place at locations such as the Museum of the Bible, the Lincoln Memorial, the World War II Memorial, and the Congressional Cemetery.
The traditional format of formal gatherings in the U.S. Capitol resumed in 2022, 2023, and 2024.
Established by President Harry S. Truman on July 4, 1952, the National Day of Prayer aligns with the tradition of reverence for the founding of the United States. Every President from George H. W. Bush onwards has issued a formal proclamation in support of the celebration. Continuing this tradition, President Joe Biden issued a statement on May 2, 2024, encouraging citizens to give thanks and asking for continued guidance and protection through prayer.

President Biden emphasized, “I invite all people of faith to join me in asking for God’s continued guidance, mercy, and protection.”
It is essential to distinguish between factual information and misinformation regarding events like the National Day of Prayer. Despite circulating misinformation on social media, the event was not canceled. The NDP has consistently upheld the observance, even during challenging times such as the COVID-19 pandemic. The significance of prayer and unity in times of uncertainty remains a fundamental aspect of this annual event, which continues to flourish and adapt.
In conclusion, amidst claims of cancelation on social media, the National Day of Prayer remained a significant and impactful event. President Joe Biden’s support for the observance and his call for unity and prayer underscore the continued importance of faith and communal support in American society.
