Wayne Brady, the multifaceted TV personality, recently opened up about his life after coming out as pansexual, emphasizing that the decision was about achieving personal happiness. Speaking at Live Out Loud’s 23rd annual Young Trailblazers Gala in New York City on May 20, Brady reflected on his journey and the importance of living authentically.
Embracing Authenticity
At the gala, where he received the Pathfinder Award for his advocacy for the LGBTQ+ community, Brady expressed his gratitude for the honor and the support from the organization. “Knowing the work that’s being done here, and the fact that I can talk to the youth and try to encourage them to live out loud, it’s something that I wish that I would’ve done earlier,” he shared on the red carpet.

A Year of Freedom
Since coming out as pansexual nine months ago, Brady notes that while his day-to-day life hasn’t changed dramatically, the sense of freedom he feels is profound. “It’s been a year. Folks expect your life to change in some radical way, and it doesn’t. It just changes that you get a level of freedom that you’re happy with,” he told PEOPLE. “No one’s going to throw me a parade. It’s more about me being happy.”
Mixed Reactions, Personal Contentment
Brady acknowledges the mixed reactions to his announcement but remains unfazed. “A lot of people loved it and applaud you, some people don’t care, and other people probably hate on it. So that’s just the human condition,” he remarked. Ultimately, what matters most to him is his own happiness and self-acceptance.
Career Highlights and New Ventures
Beyond his personal revelations, Brady continues to thrive professionally. He is currently starring in the Broadway revival of “The Wiz,” a role that he describes as a “full-circle moment” in his career. Reflecting on the significance of the show, Brady recalled its impact on him growing up and the pride he feels in representing such an iconic piece of Black culture.

Upcoming Reality Series
In addition to his Broadway success, Brady is set to star in a new reality series, “Wayne Brady: The Family Remix,” premiering on Freeform this July. The show offers an intimate look into his blended family life, including his ex-wife Mandie Taketa, their daughter Maile, Taketa’s partner Jason Fordham, and their son Sundance-Isamu. The series promises to reveal the complexities and joys of their unique family dynamic.
Moving Forward
As Wayne Brady continues to navigate his career and personal life with authenticity and openness, he remains a source of inspiration for many. His journey underscores the importance of living one’s truth and the profound impact it can have on personal well-being.
