Tragic case out of Iowa, 35-year-old Samantha Bevans has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the cold-blooded murder of her stepmother, Jodie Bevans. The verdict was reached swiftly by a jury who deliberated for just one day following closing arguments.
The murder, which occurred on June 14, 2022, shocked the community with its brutality and the circumstances leading up to it. Samantha Bevans, accompanied by her boyfriend Tacoa Talley, executed a plan to kill 58-year-old Jodie Bevans after she was kicked out of Jodie’s house.
According to a report by Law and Crime on May 20, 2024, the prosecution presented compelling evidence, including Samantha’s own video confession posted on Snapchat. In the video, captured at 9:14 a.m. on July 16, 2022, Samantha brazenly admitted to the murder, stating, “I killed her. I killed her myself,” while Talley stood behind her, acknowledging their joint culpability. The video showed Samantha smiling and flipping off the camera, further highlighting her lack of remorse.
Prosecutors argued that revenge was the motive behind the murder. After being kicked out of the house, Samantha, along with Talley, initially planned to rob Jodie, believing there was cash in a safe. However, the crime quickly escalated into murder.
During the trial, Samantha attempted to shift the blame to Talley, claiming she was under the influence of methamphetamine and only made the video to provoke a reaction from him. She testified that while she did place a pillow over her stepmother’s face, she couldn’t bring herself to press it down. However, investigators presented damning evidence to the contrary, including a taped interview where Samantha demonstrated how she used her foot to press down on the pillow, suffocating Jodie to death. A to-do list found by investigators, which included the chilling entry “Kill Jodie,” further incriminated her.

Tacoa Talley was also found guilty of first-degree murder last year and received a life sentence. He was ordered to pay $150,000 in restitution, corroborating the prosecution’s case that both he and Samantha were equally responsible for the brutal crime.
Samantha Bevans will be formally sentenced on June 14 by Sixth Judicial District Judge Chad Kepros, sealing her fate as she faces a life behind bars for her heinous actions. This case serves as a grim reminder of the devastating consequences of violent retribution and the swift justice delivered by the judicial system.
