House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries condemned Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, as a “clear and present danger” to the nation’s democracy, in a scathing attack launched just hours before the pivotal Speaker election. Jordan, vying for the Speakership for the third time, faced intense scrutiny from Jeffries, who accused him of undermining vital social programs and challenging the integrity of the electoral process.
Jeffries accused Jordan of advocating for policies that could jeopardize essential social programs, asserting, “He wants to end Social Security as we know it, he wants to end Medicare as we know it.” Additionally, he criticized Jordan’s refusal to accept President Biden’s legitimate election in 2020, branding it as “disrespectful to the American people.”
The House Minority Leader didn’t limit his critique to social issues; he also highlighted Jordan’s stance on abortion, stating, “Jim Jordan wants to impose a nationwide abortion ban,” positioning Jordan as a representative of MAGA extremism.
In a direct appeal to moderate Republicans, Jeffries urged them to distance themselves from Jordan, emphasizing the importance of bipartisanship in these contentious times.
The backdrop to this intense showdown is the vacancy left by former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), who was ousted over two weeks ago. Jordan, known for his conservative principles and his position as chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, emerged as the GOP’s Speaker-designate following Majority Leader Steve Scalise’s initial victory in a closed-door Republican vote. Scalise, however, withdrew from the race due to insufficient support from Jordan’s backers.
This marked Jordan’s third attempt to secure the necessary 217 votes within his party to become Speaker, underscoring the divisive nature of this leadership battle. Jordan’s candidacy faced opposition not just from Democrats but also from within his own party. Democrats criticized him for his association with former President Trump and his downplaying of the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol. His refusal to acknowledge the outcome of the 2020 presidential election drew criticism from both sides of the aisle.
Despite mounting challenges, Jordan remained resolute in his pursuit of the Speakership. In a press conference on Friday, he showed no signs of backing down, emphasizing the urgency of electing a Speaker to address the concerns of the American people.
The Democrats’ strategy involves connecting Republicans in swing districts who vote for Jordan with the controversial lawmaker. This tactic, they hope, will bolster their chances of regaining the House majority in the upcoming midterm elections.
As the Speaker vote looms, the intense internal divisions and fierce competition within the Republican Party have been laid bare. The outcome of this election will not only determine the House’s leadership but also set the course for legislative priorities in the coming years.
