Conservative lawyer George Conway, known for his vocal criticism of Donald Trump, downplayed the significance of the former president’s recent Supreme Court victory. Conway’s remarks, made on Friday, triggered varied reactions across the political spectrum.

The Supreme Court rejected the Department of Justice (DOJ)’s Special Counsel Jack Smith’s request to expedite Trump’s appeal process in the federal election subversion case. This case, arising from the DOJ’s indictment of Trump in August on four federal felony counts related to the Capitol riot, has been a contentious issue.

On January 6, 2021, a mob of Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol during the certification of Joe Biden’s 2020 win, following Trump’s unfounded claims of election fraud. The case against Trump, overseen by Judge Tanya Chutkan, saw a setback when she ruled against his claim of presidential immunity.

Smith sought to expedite the appeals process, but Trump’s lawyers argued against it, alleging partisan motivations. CNN’s Jake Tapper characterized the Supreme Court’s refusal to expedite as a partial win for Trump, introducing Conway on his show.

Contrary to Tapper’s assessment, Conway disputed the idea of a significant victory for Trump. He emphasized the likely minimal impact on the schedule and suggested it exposed the weakness of Trump’s immunity claim. Conway projected a timeline for the appeal process, anticipating resolution by mid-January.

Trump celebrated the Supreme Court decision on Truth Social, asserting that the lawsuit was rejected unanimously. He claimed it was election interference and argued against legal repercussions, citing his status as president during the January 6 events. Chutkan’s opinion countered this, stating that presidential immunity doesn’t confer a perpetual “get-out-of-jail-free” card.

Conway, an outspoken critic of Trump since 2018, remains influential in legal and political circles. His commentary adds a notable perspective to the ongoing legal proceedings, with public and political observers closely monitoring developments in this high-profile case.
