Dr. Francis Collins, the former director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) until late 2021, recently testified in a closed-door session before the U.S. House of Representatives Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic.
A report by The Epoch Times on Tuesday, January 16, 2024, detailed that the panel has released a summary of Dr. Collins’ transcribed interview. In the testimony held on January 12, Dr. Collins, who currently serves as President Joe Biden’s science adviser, emphasized that the theory suggesting COVID-19 originated from a laboratory in Wuhan, China, is not a conspiracy theory. He expressed the view that the lab-leak hypothesis is a credible possibility, aligning with similar statements made by Dr. Anthony Fauci, another prominent figure in the U.S. pandemic response.
Both Dr. Collins and Dr. Anthony have played crucial roles in the panel’s investigation into how the U.S. government responded to the COVID-19 pandemic. Their statements challenge earlier assertions made in a paper titled “Proximal Origins,” published in early 2020, which aimed to disprove the lab-leak theory. This paper was allegedly prompted by Dr. Collins and Dr. Anthony, although neither was acknowledged or listed as a co-author, raising questions about the U.S. government’s role in suppressing and discrediting the lab-leak hypothesis.
The panel, chaired by Rep. Brad Wenstrup (R-Ohio), has expressed concerns about inconsistencies in Dr. Anthony’s statements and potential suppression of the lab-leak theory. Additionally, the testimony revealed doubts cast by Dr. Collins and Dr. Anthony on the scientific basis of social distancing measures implemented during the pandemic. They suggested that social distancing rules, including maintaining six feet of distance, were likely not based on scientific data, which is noteworthy given the role of social distancing in various pandemic response measures, such as school closures.
Furthermore, Dr. Collins reiterated criticisms of the Great Barrington Declaration, a proposal advocating for protecting vulnerable populations while allowing healthier individuals to live with fewer restrictions. In an email to Dr. Anthony in October 2020, Dr. Collins referred to the declaration as being written by “three fringe epidemiologists,” despite the inclusion of professors from prestigious institutions.
Although the transcripts of the testimonies from Dr. Collins and Dr. Anthony have not been released as of now, the subcommittee members have indicated that they will be disclosed at some point in the future. These revelations underscore the ongoing debate and scrutiny surrounding the origins of COVID-19 and the response to the pandemic by government officials.
