Stirred considerable media attention, country star Billy Ray Cyrus has reacted to a leaked audio recording in which he is heard berating his estranged wife, singer Firerose. The contentious audio, first reported by the Daily Mail, captures Cyrus in a heated argument, expressing his frustration with Firerose for allegedly making him late to a Nicki Minaj concert where he was scheduled to appear.
In the viral clip, Cyrus can be heard shouting expletives and accusing Firerose, born Johanna Hodges, of being uncooperative and selfish. “You once again showed that you will not listen,” he says in the recording. “I don’t know who the fuck you think you are, but you will not fucking listen.” His anger continues as he dismisses her intelligence and character, calling her a “selfish fucking bitch.”
The recording, published on Tuesday, prompted a swift response from Cyrus, who addressed the issue via Instagram Story on Wednesday. In his statement, Cyrus expressed his frustration and alleged that Firerose was deceitful. “Hell yeah, I was at my wit’s end,” he wrote, adding that he had realized something was wrong long before he discovered what he described as her fraudulent nature. He accused Firerose of trying to take over his career and life, stating, “See you in court.”
Billy Ray Cyrus and Firerose, who married in October 2023, have been embroiled in a legal battle since Cyrus filed for divorce in May, citing irreconcilable differences and “inappropriate marital conduct.” Firerose responded with her own divorce filing, accusing Cyrus of severe verbal, emotional, and psychological abuse.
Cyrus’s legal team, represented by attorneys Rose Palermo and Jason Talley, criticized the leaked recording as a “last-ditch effort” by Firerose to extract money from Cyrus. They claimed that Firerose recorded the conversation without Cyrus’s knowledge and was intentionally on her best behavior during the recording.
Firerose’s spokesperson, however, disputed these claims, suggesting that the recording was clear evidence of Cyrus’s abusive behavior. “His ongoing smear campaign against her is exhausting and his many different stories continue to grow and evolve,” the spokesperson said.
