KIRTLAND AIR FORCE BASE, NM – A deadly confrontation outside Truman Gate has sent shockwaves through Kirtland Air Force Base, as officials confirm the identity of the airman fatally shot in the early hours of February 22, 2025.
Airman Basic Brion Teel-Scott, 27, of Bordentown, N.J., assigned to the 377th Security Forces Squadron, was killed after allegedly attempting to flee during an attempted detention. Another airman sustained a gunshot wound to the hand in the same incident.
The violent encounter unfolded around 2 a.m., when base security personnel responded to an incident near the installation’s entrance. According to initial reports, what began as a routine response quickly escalated into an off-base pursuit, culminating in gunfire. The details of what led to the shooting remain unclear, but investigators are now working to determine the full scope of events.
Col. Michael Power, commander of the 377th Air Base Wing, shared his grief over the loss, calling it an especially difficult tragedy.
“Losing a member of your team is never easy, but the circumstances of this incident make it that much harder,” Power stated. “We are focused on supporting our injured defender, the Wingmen of both members, and our base community.”
The Air Force Office of Special Investigations (AFOSI) is leading the inquiry with assistance from the FBI, leaving many questions unanswered as the investigation continues.
