Appearing on Antiques Roadshow, guests always hope their cherished items might be worth a small fortune. In one memorable episode, this dream became a reality for a guest, leaving him astonished and determined not to part with his treasured possession.

A Historic Programme

Running since 1979, the BBC’s Antiques Roadshow travels the country with expert appraisers evaluating locals’ items. While many items don’t receive a cash valuation, others are so valuable that their owners are left speechless. One item, in particular, had an exceptionally high value and an equally significant backstory.

War Medals with a Rich History

The item in question was a collection of war medals given to the guest by his late father. The medals, passed down through the family, included one from the Battle of Waterloo. Antiques expert Mark Smith quickly identified their incredible value, explaining the historical significance of each medal.

Mark shared, “This medal, for instance, has the Battle of Waterloo on the back and the word Wellington. It’s the first-ever medal the British forces gave to anyone. Before that, they gave out coins without names, which couldn’t be worn.”

A Staggering Valuation

He further detailed the history: “At the end of the Battle of Waterloo, this medal was instituted to be given to every soldier. Lord Wellington decided they should all be the same regardless of rank because everyone did the same job. This includes the 10-year-old drummer boys who were on the battlefield.”

The valuation of these medals was a staggering £12,000. Mark emphasized their rarity, noting, “You don’t see Waterloo medals like this unless you go to a regimental museum.”

An Unexpected Reaction

The guest, initially thinking the medals might be worth only £25, was taken aback by the £12,000 valuation. Despite the high value, he decided not to sell the medals. Instead, he expressed his intention to keep them in the family and eventually pass them down to his grandson.
