United States President Joe Biden shared his concerns about the escalating Gaza conflict in a press conference on Monday. He called on Israel to show restraint, especially when it comes to actions that could harm hospitals, as reported by The Hill on November 13, 2023.

Biden stressed the importance of a less aggressive approach, cautioning against strikes on medical facilities. Speaking from the Oval Office, he said, I hope there will be less intrusive action regarding hospitals, and we’re in touch with the Israelis. There’s also an effort to pause for the release of prisoners, and that’s being negotiated. So, I remain somewhat hopeful, but protecting hospitals is crucial.

The President’s remarks come as Israeli forces approach the Al-Shifa hospital complex in Gaza, the largest medical center in the area. Israel claims that Hamas uses this hospital for coordinating attacks, but this information hasn’t been independently verified. Previous reports have suggested Hamas using the hospital for press conferences during conflicts.

In 2008, The New York Times reported Hamas gunmen in civilian clothing around the hospital, posing as security guards but engaging in violence against those suspected of collaboration with Israel. Despite Israel’s claims, Gazan health officials warn of dire conditions inside Al-Shifa due to a lack of essential supplies.

The Gaza health ministry’s spokesperson, Ashraf Al-Qidra, revealed that 32 patients, including three newborns, had died in the last three days due to the siege and power shortages.

President Biden’s comments emphasize the White House’s stance, urging Israel to follow the laws of war and minimize civilian impact in its operations against Hamas.

The recent conflict originated from the October 7 terrorist attacks, resulting in over 1,000 Israeli casualties. While supporting Israel’s right to defend itself, the Biden administration has shifted its tone recently, emphasizing humanitarian aid and civilian protection.

Facing pressure from progressive lawmakers and activists calling for a cease-fire in Gaza, the administration, while rejecting an official cease-fire, is working to negotiate humanitarian pauses with Israel to allow aid into Gaza and facilitate the evacuation of civilians.

Last week, Israel agreed to brief pauses in fighting in specific Gaza areas for these purposes. As the situation develops, President Biden remains engaged in diplomatic efforts, balancing support for Israel’s security with the imperative to protect innocent lives and critical infrastructure in Gaza.
