A Taylor Swift-themed billboard supporting Amendment 4, which aims to protect abortion access in Florida, will be unveiled this Friday, October 18, 2024. Positioned strategically along I-95 northbound near the Golden Glades interchange, the billboard will be just two miles from Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, where Swift is set to perform for three nights during her Eras Tour.
Commissioned by the youth-led nonprofit Florida Student Power Network, the billboard features a vibrant cotton candy color scheme and bears the message: “Swifties, time to shake off Florida’s abortion ban. Vote yes on Amendment 4 this November 5th to protect reproductive rights!” The installation is part of a broader campaign to raise awareness about the importance of reproductive rights in the upcoming election.
Nathalie Aburto, a spokesperson for the Florida Student Power Network and the artist behind the billboard, emphasized the urgency of the message. She stated, “It’s time for Florida to shake off the abortion bans that are costing our lives, our futures, and our bodily autonomy. Women should be able to make choices about their bodies with their doctors, their families, and their faiths, not politicians. We are taking our power back by voting Yes on 4 this election.”
The timing of the billboard’s launch coincides with rising tensions surrounding the Amendment. Republican Governor Ron DeSantis has threatened to take legal action against television stations airing ads in support of the amendment, signaling the contentious nature of the upcoming vote.
What is Amendment 4?
Amendment 4, also known as the “Right to Abortion Initiative,” aims to enshrine abortion access in Florida’s state constitution. The proposed referendum is straightforward: it states that “No law shall prohibit, penalize, delay, or restrict abortion before viability or when necessary to protect the patient’s health, as determined by the patient’s healthcare provider.” Fetal viability is estimated to be around 24 weeks of pregnancy, aligning with the standard previously upheld under Roe v. Wade.
As Swifties gather for the concerts this weekend, the billboard serves as a reminder of the ongoing fight for reproductive rights in Florida. With Election Day fast approaching on November 5, the push for Amendment 4 aims to rally support among young voters and advocates for women’s autonomy over their healthcare choices.
