China’s Ministry of State Security made a significant announcement on Sunday, revealing that a Chinese citizen employed at a defense institute was accused of spying for the United States. The case, now transferred to a court in Chengdu for trial, underscores China’s steadfast commitment to national security and its stringent anti-spying laws. According to Chinese state broadcaster CCTV, the accused individual, identified only as Mr. Hou, was sent as a visiting scholar to an undisclosed U.S. university in 2013. During his tenure there, he was allegedly coerced into divulging Chinese state secrets. The university’s identity was not disclosed in the official statement.
CCTV’s report states that Hou was introduced to an individual posing as an employee of a consulting company, who, in reality, was an American intelligence officer using the firm as a cover. Over the course of their acquaintance, the officer lured Hou into espionage activities, promising substantial financial incentives. Hou, fearing for his family’s safety, reluctantly agreed to cooperate.
Under their arrangement, Hou divulged highly classified secrets during hour-long sessions, for which he was compensated $1,000 each time. This collaboration persisted even after Hou’s return to China in 2014. He continued to meet U.S. intelligence agents during international conferences and provided intelligence information in the fields of national defense and military industry.
Chinese authorities initiated an investigation into Hou’s activities, leading to his detention in July 2021. He was subsequently charged with suspicion of espionage, marking another high-profile case in China’s ongoing efforts to curb espionage activities within its borders.
This incident highlights the increasing concerns raised by nations, including the United States, regarding China’s aggressive counter-espionage measures. The case follows recent revelations by China’s spy agency about a U.S. citizen who was sentenced to life imprisonment earlier this year for espionage-related activities.
