Former President Donald Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis intensified their campaigns in Iowa on Saturday, staging competing events in Cedar Rapids and Newton, respectively, just six weeks ahead of the crucial Iowa caucuses.
The dueling rallies, meticulously organized to bolster support in the lead-up to the caucuses, showcased the distinct strategies of the two prominent Republican figures vying for attention in the pivotal state.
Governor DeSantis, committed to a traditional approach, fulfilled his promise to visit all 99 counties in Iowa, a strategic move employed by presidential candidates seeking to connect with voters through intimate interactions at diners, cookouts, and local venues. Governor Reynolds applauded DeSantis for his hands-on approach, emphasizing, “He’s showing up. He’s not just landing, doing an event and heading out. He has put the time into the state.”
However, Trump’s campaign dismissed DeSantis’ county-hopping initiative, drawing parallels to lesser-known GOP candidate Ryan Binkley, who had already achieved this milestone. The timing of Trump’s Cedar Rapids event, in proximity to DeSantis’ 99th county celebration, was deemed coincidental by the campaign.
The divergent campaigning styles were further highlighted by DeSantis, who focused on smaller gatherings in rural areas, championing conservative credentials such as a six-week abortion law signed in April and prominent endorsements. In contrast, Trump opted for larger city venues, rallying loyal supporters around populist themes and a politics-of-grievances approach. Notably, Trump bypassed several influential Iowa events, opting for rival gatherings elsewhere.
A significant disparity arises in the form of “Never Back Down,” the super PAC supporting DeSantis. With substantial investments in media advertisements, door-knocking, and caucus pledges, the unprecedented nature of the super PAC adds a dynamic element to DeSantis’ ground operation. The governor’s commitment to winning the Iowa caucuses, seen as a strategic move to thwart Trump’s perceived inevitability, has been met with internal conflicts within affiliated super PACs.
With Trump enjoying a considerable lead in both polls and fundraising within the GOP field, DeSantis faces a formidable challenge. The governor aims to leverage coveted endorsements from influential figures, including Gov. Kim Reynolds, who attended the Saturday rally, and prominent evangelical Bob Vander Plaats.
As the political drama unfolds, the impact of these rival campaigns on the Iowa caucuses and the broader GOP nomination race remains uncertain, adding an element of suspense to the unfolding political narrative.
