A recent report by The Hill on November 18, 2023, more than 100 ex-White House officials are voicing their support for President Biden’s handling of the Israel-Hamas war. The letter, covered by The New York Times, boasts 127 signatures, applauding Biden’s moral clarity, brave leadership, and unwavering support for Israel.

Highlighting their endorsement of the president’s proposed $14.3 billion aid package for Israel and his choice not to support a cease-fire, the officials include notable names such as Colin Kahl, former Undersecretary for Defense, ex-Chief of Staff Ron Klain, and economic advisor Lawrence Summers from the Obama era. Representatives Josh Gottheimer, Wiley Nickel, and Haley Stevens have also added their support.

The conflict in Gaza erupted a month ago when Hamas militants initiated a surprise attack on Israeli border communities, resulting in 1,200 casualties. In response, Israeli air strikes and a ground campaign claimed the lives of over 11,100 Palestinians.

The signatories argue that the public nature of their endorsement lends more weight to their declaration compared to dissent letters, which avoided listing signers due to potential repercussions.

Dissent letters, accumulating over 2,000 signatures from Biden administration staff, State Department, and U.S. Agency for International Development members, reflect deep divisions among Democrats regarding the level of U.S. support for the Israeli military.

Over a dozen House Progressives joined a resolution last month urging a cease-fire, a move President Biden has rejected. The previous letter from ex-White House staffers acknowledged support against Hamas but stressed the need to push back against aggressive Israeli military actions towards Gaza civilians.

Internal diplomatic cables from State Department staff urging a cease-fire have not been made public, indicating divisions within the government. Concerns about civilian casualties and strained relationships with Middle Eastern nations have been voiced.

As the conflict persists, Democratic divisions continue to escalate, with congressional staff signing open letters of dissent and staging walkouts in protest.
