Nebraska man walked free from jail—only to commit a horrifying crime just 24 hours later. Authorities say 54-year-old Casey Kindt forced his way into his ex-girlfriend’s home, shot her multiple times, and then attempted to take his own life.
The victim, 36-year-old Jamie Hagen, was found dead in her Seward residence, just 25 miles northwest of Lincoln. It was her 15-year-old daughter who dialed 911 shortly before midnight on Saturday, alerting authorities to the brutal scene unfolding in their home on North Second Street.
When officers arrived, they found the front door had been forced open. Moments later, Kindt emerged, his face covered in blood, a firearm tucked into his waistband. The Nebraska State Patrol later confirmed his injuries were self-inflicted.
A Troubled Past with a Fatal End
Kindt’s violent history with Hagen was no secret to law enforcement. On December 16, he was arrested for assaulting her in front of one of her children, allegedly shoving her into walls and making terrifying threats. Court documents reveal he told her, “I will deck you, I will f—ing end you.”
Hagen quickly obtained a protection order, but it did little to keep her safe. Despite multiple arrests, Kindt managed to contact her through a third party on January 4, allegedly offering to make his charges “go away” if she cooperated.
A judge increased his bond to $75,000, but Kindt posted it on Friday—just a day before he reportedly forced his way back into Hagen’s life for the last time.
A Life Cut Short, a Family Left in Mourning
Inside the home, officers discovered Hagen’s lifeless body in a bedroom, suffering from gunshot wounds to the forehead, arm, and chest. Her daughter, unharmed but locked in another bedroom, had witnessed the horror unfold.
Paramedics rushed Kindt to a hospital for his life-threatening injuries, where he remains under police custody. As of now, formal charges have not been filed, but authorities are actively investigating the case.
Hagen’s father, Charles Hagen, shared his heartbreak, revealing that his daughter had once planned a future with Kindt before his aggression surfaced. “She did everything right, and it didn’t really do any good,” he said. “If he’d just stayed in jail, this wouldn’t have happened.”
