Former federal employee is making waves on social media after revealing they’re considering cutting ties with longtime friends and family over their continued support for Donald Trump — even after his administration reportedly oversaw the firing of more than 60,000 federal workers.

The viral post, made by a Reddit user identifying themselves as one of the many federal employees let go early in Trump’s presidency, is drawing intense reactions across political lines. Titled with raw honesty and emotion, the post began with the question: “Am I overreacting and acting out of emotion?” — and from there, things only got more heated.

The user, who chose to remain anonymous but goes by Comfortable_Gift4970 online, explained that being unexpectedly let go from a job they deeply cared about has changed the way they see the people around them. “I’ve always considered myself extremely tolerant,” they wrote, “but I feel so personally betrayed by those that voted for him. I can’t look at them the same way anymore.”

Despite never supporting Trump, the poster said they’d always tried to keep the peace with loved ones who did. But after the abrupt job loss, they’re now contemplating severing ties with every Trump supporter in their life — including some relationships that go back over two decades. “Some have apologized,” they added, “but then I see them posting support for him — and now Musk — like nothing happened.”

Reactions poured in, with many Reddit users expressing solidarity. One commenter wrote, “Let them know they voted you out of a job,” while another added, “Maybe next time they’ll think before they vote.” Others encouraged the fired employee to speak their truth — not to shame, but to educate those close to them about the very real consequences of political decisions.

However, not everyone was on their side. Critics accused the user of hypocrisy, saying their sudden outrage only surfaced once they were personally affected. “So you didn’t care until it happened to you?” one person wrote. “Leopards eating faces, etc.”

Another took an even harder stance: “You were let go because your agency had to cut costs. That’s not personal. Go find another job — there’s less red tape now.”

Some users advocated for a middle ground: withdraw quietly, take time to heal, and then reassess. Others warned against turning loved ones into enemies based on politics alone. Still, the original poster’s dilemma clearly struck a nerve — not just because of its emotional weight, but because it reflects a deeper divide happening in families and friend groups across the country.

What would you do if you lost your job due to political decisions — and the people closest to you supported those very leaders? Drop your thoughts in the comments.
