Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio), the GOP’s vice presidential pick, has intensified the debate over President Joe Biden’s fitness for office by calling for his resignation. Vance’s statement comes amid increasing scrutiny of Biden’s 2024 presidential campaign and performance.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, Vance declared, “Everyone calling on Joe Biden to stop running without also calling on him to resign the presidency is engaged in an absurd level of cynicism. If you can’t run, you can’t serve. He should resign now.”
The call for Biden to resign reflects growing concerns over his capacity to handle the presidency, especially after a lackluster debate performance against GOP rival Donald Trump in June. This debate highlighted fears about the 81-year-old president’s mental acuity and sparked calls from over 30 Democratic lawmakers for him to withdraw from the 2024 race.
Despite these pressures, Biden remains resolute. In a statement released Friday, he affirmed his commitment to his campaign. “I look forward to getting back on the campaign trail next week to continue exposing the threat of Donald Trump’s Project 2025 agenda while making the case for my own record and the vision that I have for America,” Biden said. He emphasized his dedication to preserving democracy, protecting rights, and creating opportunities for all Americans.
Vance’s statement adds to the ongoing controversy surrounding Biden’s candidacy and raises questions about the future of his presidency amid mounting political and public pressure.
