Instant Messaging on Set

During a recent episode of the “Office Ladies” podcast, co-hosted by Fischer and fellow cast member Angela Kinsey, Fischer shared that the cast members communicated through AOL Instant Messenger during filming. John Krasinski, who played Jim Halpert, took the initiative to set up the messaging system on their computers. According to Fischer, Krasinski went around the set, setting up the accounts, so they could chat during scenes. “John Krasinski went around to our computers and set up instant message,” Fischer recounted. “He did this so that we could joke around in the background of scenes… and I got to work one day, and he was like, ‘Check it out.’”

Character-Themed Screen Names

Staying true to their characters, the cast members chose screen names that reflected their roles on the show. Fischer humorously recalled being dubbed “receptionitis15,” a playful nod to her character’s receptionist duties. Kinsey, who portrayed the strict accountant Angela Martin, selected “MSaccountant” as her screen name. “We were so tickled that we could now IM each other during scenes,” Kinsey reminisced, highlighting how the cast kept their online personas consistent with their on-screen roles.

Interacting with Fans

The actors didn’t just limit their online interactions to each other. Fischer revealed that she sometimes messaged fans during filming. Using MySpace, she would connect with viewers and give them insider information about upcoming scenes. “I would IM with fans during scenes,” Fischer shared. She would even tell fans to watch for specific moments, such as when Dwight, played by Rainn Wilson, discussed “hot dog fingers” in the episode “Healthcare.” This interaction added an extra layer of engagement for dedicated viewers who followed the show closely.

A Fun Work Environment

The use of instant messaging was just one of the many ways the cast of “The Office” kept the atmosphere light and fun. These candid moments and interactions reveal a playful side to the actors that fans rarely get to see. It also underscores the close-knit relationship among the cast members, who often carried their on-screen camaraderie into real life.

“The Office” continues to be a beloved show, not just for its witty writing and memorable characters but also for the genuine chemistry among the cast. Jenna Fischer’s revelations offer fans a glimpse into the playful and supportive environment that made the series so special. Whether it was chatting with co-stars or engaging with fans, the behind-the-scenes dynamics added an extra charm to the iconic show.
