Former President Donald Trump’s recent Truth Social posting frenzy on Boxing Day included selectively quoting New York Magazine’s Jonathan Chait, who had criticized the Colorado Supreme Court’s decision to disqualify Trump from the ballot under the 14th Amendment.
Trump highlighted Chait’s words: To deny the voters the chance to elect the candidate of their choice is a Rubicon-crossing event for the judiciary. It would be seen forever by tens of millions of Americans as a negation of democracy.
However, Chait wasn’t pleased with being quoted selectively. He swiftly took to social media to clarify that his column was not an endorsement of Trump’s candidacy and actions. Chait emphasized, The column he’s quoting also argues, ‘His use of violent threats to secure power is obviously unforgivable, authoritarian, and very likely criminal.
The Colorado Supreme Court had ruled that Trump’s actions constituted insurrection, a decision in line with a lower court ruling. This led to his disqualification under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, designed to disqualify individuals engaged in insurrection. Trump is expected to appeal this decision to the U.S. Supreme Court.
