Mother’s worst nightmare became a devastating reality when five-year-old Thomas Cooper was trapped inside a burning hyperbaric chamber—his mother, Annie Cooper, making a last-ditch attempt to save him.

The tragic incident unfolded at The Oxford Center in Troy, Michigan, on the morning of January 31, when an explosion inside the facility led to a catastrophic fire. Little Thomas, known for his infectious energy and love for singing about his ‘Mama,’ was undergoing oxygen therapy when disaster struck.

As flames engulfed the chamber, Annie Cooper, from Royal Oak—a suburb just south of Troy—rushed to rescue her son, suffering severe burns in her frantic efforts. Despite her desperate attempts, she was unable to reach him.

Attorney James Harrington, representing the grieving family, detailed the heartbreaking scene. Speaking to NBC News, he revealed, “She has significant burns on her arm, sustained during her attempt to free Thomas. She kept trying, but the flames were too strong. The physical wounds will heal, but the emotional scars will last forever.”

Initially set up to help the family navigate the financial strain of Thomas’s passing. However, the campaign, seemingly created by Annie, has since been suspended.

Described as a bright, curious child, Thomas was fascinated by how things worked, loved drawing, and had an adventurous spirit. His favorite pastime was going into ‘super sonic mode’—running as fast as he could, rolling down hills, and stomping in mud. He adored Minecraft, Mario, and dressing up as his favorite characters, often alongside his little brother, his best friend.

The Oxford Center, which specializes in hyperbaric oxygen therapy and other treatments, has temporarily shut down as investigations continue. The facility released a statement expressing its devastation, saying, “The safety and well-being of the children we serve is our highest priority. Nothing like this has happened in our 15 years of operation.” Authorities are still working to determine the exact cause of the explosion.

For Annie Cooper, the loss is immeasurable. Just weeks ago, her little boy was singing, ‘I love Mama, I love Mama, I love Mama so very much.’ Now, his voice is a memory—one that will echo in her heart forever.
