New York City finds itself set to allocate over a billion dollars towards hotel accommodations for undocumented immigrants over the next three years. This hefty expenditure comes as a direct consequence of its self-proclaimed status as a “Sanctuary City.”
However, the staggering hotel expenses are only part of the financial burden. According to NYC Mayor Eric Adams, the total cost of addressing the migrant crisis is estimated to soar to a whopping $12 billion over the next three years.
“We are reaching a breaking point,” Mayor Adams remarked. “On an average night, we are providing shelter and services for more than 57,300 individuals, which translates to an astounding $9.8 million each day. That’s nearly $300 million per month and a staggering $3.6 billion annually.”
Frustration among NYC residents has reached its peak. In a recent incident captured on video, several Staten Island locals were arrested for obstructing migrant buses in protest of the situation.
The financial implications of accommodating undocumented immigrants have triggered concerns among the city’s residents. As New York City grapples with these challenges, the debate surrounding its “Sanctuary City” status and the associated costs continues to intensify.
