Shocking incident unfolded near one of the devastating Los Angeles wildfires as Mexican national Juan Manuel Sierra-Leyva, an illegal immigrant, was detained by residents while wielding a yellow blowtorch. The community in Calabasas acted swiftly, restraining the suspect near the Kenneth Fire until police arrived.
Eyewitness Renata Grinshpun described the community’s quick response: “A few gentlemen surrounded him, got him on his knees, and used zip ties and rope for a citizen’s arrest.” Video footage shows the suspect focused on advancing with the blowtorch, reportedly saying, “I can’t stop. I’m not putting this down.”
Sierra-Leyva, who was on probation, was taken to the Topanga police station but not formally charged with arson due to insufficient evidence. Los Angeles Police Department Divisional Chief Dominic Choi noted, “There was not enough probable cause to arrest this person on arson or suspicion of arson,” though investigations are ongoing.
Meanwhile, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has issued a detainer request for Sierra-Leyva, though California’s sanctuary state laws may prevent its enforcement. This controversy arises as four wildfires ravage over 40,000 acres, destroying 12,300 structures, including celebrity homes and upscale hotspots.
The fires have claimed 24 lives so far, with dozens still missing. Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna warned the toll could rise as cadaver dogs search through the charred remains. Adding to the devastation, meteorologists predict winds of up to 70 mph, exacerbating the spread of fires and delaying evacuees from returning to their neighborhoods.
Authorities continue to urge caution, advising residents to avoid actions that could spark new fires, such as using lawn equipment or leaving campfires smoldering, as Southern California braces for more extreme conditions.
