Puerto Rican reggaeton star Nicky Jam has announced his decision to retract his endorsement of former President Donald Trump. This announcement, made through a video on his Instagram, comes after Trump ally Tony Hinchcliffe made derogatory remarks about Puerto Rico and Latinos during a recent rally.
In the video, Jam explained his initial support for Trump, stating, “The reason I supported Donald Trump is because I believed it was what’s best for the economy in the United States, where a lot of Latinos live… a lot of immigrants that are suffering over the state of the economy.” He believed Trump’s background as a businessman would help improve conditions for the Latino community.
However, Jam’s sentiments changed after hearing Hinchcliffe’s comments, which he described as disrespectful. “Never in my life did I think that a month later, a comedian would appear to criticize and talk badly about my [Puerto Rico],” he expressed. “That’s why I’m renouncing my support for Donald Trump and stepping away from any political conversation. Puerto Rico deserves respect.”
Hinchcliffe’s remarks, made at a Trump rally in New York’s Madison Square Garden, sparked widespread outrage. He referred to Puerto Rico in derogatory terms, stating, “There’s literally a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean right now. I think it’s called Puerto Rico.” These comments drew condemnation from numerous prominent Puerto Ricans and other figures in the media and entertainment industry, including Bad Bunny, Don Omar, Jennifer Lopez, and Ricky Martin.
Nicky Jam’s previous appearance at a Trump rally generated its own controversy when Trump mistakenly introduced him as a “hot” woman, misgendering the artist during the announcement of his endorsement. This moment went viral, yet Jam remained silent about it until his recent statement.
By stepping away from political discussions, Jam emphasizes the importance of respect for Puerto Rico and its people. His decision reflects a growing sentiment among artists and public figures advocating for the rights and dignity of Puerto Ricans, especially in light of insensitive remarks from political allies.
