A new poll reveals that over a third of Americans agree with Donald Trump’s controversial statement that undocumented immigrants are “poisoning the blood” of the United States. Conducted by the Brookings Institution and the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI), the survey shows alarming support for rhetoric echoing extremist ideologies.
The poll, which surveyed more than 5,000 individuals between August 16 and September 4, found that 34% of respondents shared Trump’s view on immigration. The language used by Trump has drawn significant criticism for its resemblance to Nazi rhetoric, particularly from Adolf Hitler’s infamous manifesto, Mein Kampf.

The poll highlighted a stark political divide in the U.S. regarding immigration, with 61% of Republicans, 30% of independents, and 13% of Democrats agreeing that immigrants are “poisoning the blood of our country.” Robert Jones, the president of PRRI, voiced concern about the implications of these results, calling it “truly alarming” that such extremist language has found support within one of the country’s major political parties.
“This kind of rhetoric, drawn directly from Nazi ideology, poses a serious threat to the country’s political and social fabric,” Jones stated during the presentation of the poll’s findings.
Trump’s Controversial Statement on Immigration
Trump initially made these remarks in a December 2023 rally in New Hampshire, where he told his supporters that millions of undocumented immigrants were entering the U.S. and “poisoning the blood” of the nation. He claimed that these immigrants were being sent from institutions around the world, further stoking fears of a wide-reaching immigration problem. The former president repeated the phrase in subsequent interviews and social media posts, amplifying his stance to his base.
Trump’s choice of words has sparked outrage among both political figures and commentators. Geraldo Rivera, a television personality, and former Trump supporter, said in a NewsNation interview that the remark was one of the reasons he could no longer support Trump, particularly considering its offensive nature to Latino communities. Rivera stated, “I don’t know how any Latino person with self-respect could support such rhetoric.”
Nazi Rhetoric Comparison
The phrase “blood poisoning,” used by Trump, has historical roots in Adolf Hitler’s Mein Kampf, where it was employed to promote racial purity and justify the persecution of minorities. Critics, including former Republican presidential candidate Chris Christie, condemned Trump’s comments as “disgusting,” emphasizing the dangerous implications of such rhetoric in American politics.

Despite the backlash, Trump’s base remains largely supportive of his hardline immigration stance. The poll revealed that nearly one in four Trump supporters (23%) believe that if he loses the upcoming presidential election, he should declare the results invalid and take extreme measures to assume office. This finding further underscores the polarized state of American politics and the fervent loyalty Trump commands among his followers.
