Our New Speaker is An Extreme Christian Fundamentalist and Election Denier

Republicans in the House of Representatives have elected Representative Mike Johnson as the new Speaker, ending a 22-day impasse within the party. Johnson, a staunch evangelical Christian from Louisiana, has been a vocal proponent of overturning the 2020 election results, making him a controversial choice for one of the highest offices in the nation.

The 220 votes that secured Johnson’s victory mark a significant shift within the Republican Party, reflecting the rise of the MAGA (Make America Great Again) faction. This endorsement was further underscored by former President Donald Trump, who publicly backed Johnson for the position after withdrawing his support for Mike Emmer’s nomination just a day earlier.

A four-term congressman, Johnson gained notoriety for leading an amicus brief signed by over 100 Republicans aimed at overturning election results in key battleground states, including Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. He claimed to have taken this action at the behest of Donald Trump himself.

On January 6, 2021, during the Capitol riot, Johnson played a pivotal role, being identified as the “most important architect of the Electoral College objections” by The New York Times. He convinced a significant portion of his party, leveraging his legal expertise, to object to the Electoral College results on the grounds of “constitutional infirmity.”

Beyond his role in election disputes, Johnson’s staunch conservative views are well-documented. He has consistently voted against LGBTQ rights, notably opposing legislation to codify same-sex marriage that was signed into law earlier this year by President Biden. In 2022, Johnson introduced a controversial federal bill referred to by advocates as a “Don’t Say Gay” law, which sought to prohibit classroom instruction on gender identity and sexual orientation up to the third grade.

Johnson, a vocal advocate for anti-abortion causes, has supported a national abortion ban and co-sponsored multiple bills aimed at restricting abortion on a nationwide level. His unwavering stance against abortion has earned him an A+ rating from the Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America group.

In addition to his political career, Johnson hosts a religious podcast titled “Truth Be Told” alongside his wife, further emphasizing the intertwining of his faith and politics.

The divisive nature of Johnson’s past actions and statements has led to sharp divisions within the House, with Democratic Representative Pete Aguilar cautioning against his election, citing Johnson’s pivotal role in the Electoral College objections. Meanwhile, Republican Representative Anna Paulina Luna openly celebrated Johnson’s election, expressing strong support for his controversial positions.

Johnson’s assumption of the Speaker’s role has sparked intense debate within political circles, raising questions about the future direction of the Republican Party under his leadership.
