Donald Trump’s legal defense team continues to crumble, with Jenna Ellis, the former senior legal adviser to the ex-president, pleading guilty to one felony charge of aiding and abetting false statements and writing. This marks the second attorney in Trump’s circle to flip on him in the ongoing case to overturn the 2020 election results.
Ellis, a Colorado-based lawyer, entered her guilty plea in Fulton County Superior Court in Georgia on Monday. She agreed to serve five years probation, pay a $5,000 fine, and complete 100 hours of community service. Additionally, she was required to write an apology letter to the state and testify at all legal proceedings involving other individuals charged in the case.
This development comes just days after another of Trump’s attorneys, Sidney Powell, also pleaded guilty to criminal charges related to the Georgia election interference case. Powell, who was initially charged with seven felonies, ended up pleading guilty to six misdemeanors. She was sentenced to six years of probation, fined $6,000, and ordered to pay $2,700 in restitution.
Ellis’ downfall began earlier this year when a Colorado judge censured her for misconduct, specifically for making false statements about the 2020 election being stolen. In her emotional statement to the judge in Georgia, Ellis admitted to 10 such misrepresentations and blamed more experienced attorneys for providing her with false information.
Despite these legal developments, the fervent belief in election conspiracy or fraud within the MAGA (Make America Great Again) community remains steadfast. Ellis, once a staunch defender of Trump, has now become another lawyer to face consequences for her involvement in challenging the election results. However, her guilty plea, along with Powell’s, has not swayed Trump supporters who continue to assert that the 2020 election was stolen from the former president.
The guilty pleas of Trump’s legal advisers have failed to alter the beliefs of many MAGA voters, who remain entrenched in their conviction that Trump’s victory was unjustly taken away. The deep-seated claims of election conspiracy within the MAGA fanbase persist, highlighting the challenge of reconciling political allegiance with legal realities.
