Scathing critique following Thursday’s debate between President Joe Biden and Donald Trump, two-time Pulitzer Prize winner and Washington Post associate editor Bob Woodward has called Biden’s performance a “political hydrogen bomb.” Woodward, famous for his investigative prowess during the Watergate scandal, expressed shock and disbelief at Biden’s underwhelming showing, describing it as “so bad, so awful.”

During an interview on MSNBC’s “The Beat,” Woodward emphasized the need for aggressive journalistic inquiry into the reasons behind Biden’s poor performance. He asserted that after extensive preparation and the recognition of the debate’s significance, Biden’s failure demands immediate explanation, rather than waiting for future retrospectives.

Woodward’s comments come amid a growing chorus of doubts about Biden’s electoral viability, echoing concerns voiced by influential figures like the New York Times’ editorial board, which recently called for Biden to consider stepping down.

“I sat there and watched it, and I could not believe it,” Woodward remarked, highlighting the stark contrast in public perception, with a CNN flash poll indicating that 67% of viewers favored Trump’s debate performance over Biden’s.

Woodward concluded by urging journalists not to dismiss the debate as merely a bad night for Biden, stressing the need for deeper investigation into the root causes of what he termed a “mega-disaster.”

President Biden, meanwhile, continues his campaign efforts undeterred, addressing supporters in Raleigh, North Carolina, in the aftermath of the debate.
