The legendary musician Sade has emerged from a six-year hiatus with her latest song, “Young Lion,” a heartfelt tribute dedicated to her son, Izaak Theo Adu. The track appears on the anticipated 46-track compilation TRAИƧA, produced by the nonprofit Red Hot. The album, scheduled for release on November 22, will feature original music from influential artists, including André 3000 and Sam Smith.
Sade Adu, known for her privacy, reveals a deeply personal side in “Young Lion.” The Grammy-winning artist’s ballad addresses the pain and struggles her son endured as a transgender man, reflecting on her wish to have provided understanding and support sooner. “Young man, it’s been so heavy for you / You must have felt so alone / I should have known,” she sings in the song’s poignant lyrics.
Over the years, Adu has been an openly supportive figure in Izaak’s journey. Her son has shared much of his transition experience publicly, and his gratitude for his mother’s unwavering love and acceptance resonates deeply. In Young Lion, Sade extends an apology to her son, acknowledging her past lack of understanding while offering words of affirmation: “Shine like a sun / You have everything you need.”
Through an Instagram post, Sade shared her vision for the song, writing, “Trans people have always existed, with many different names across time and culture, often as spiritual healers and leaders. As global systems continue to fail humanity and all life on Earth, the journey taken by trans people – and all peoples who have been oppressed – is a blueprint of possibility. May this be a glimpse of our collective liberation, and the light inside all of us.”
The TRAИƧA project will feature contributions from 100 artists and is divided into eight chapters, each representing a color of the pride flag. With its release just around the corner, fans worldwide await the impact of Sade’s return and the compilation’s powerful message of unity and resilience.
