A recent social media post on Friday, January 12, former President Donald Trump sharply criticized the conduct of New York Attorney General Letitia James during a court hearing held the previous day.
Trump honed in on what he perceived as James’s relaxed demeanor in court, noting that she was “comfortably and confidently” seated with “her shoes off, arms folded, a Starbucks Coffee, and a BIG smile on her face.” The former president insinuated that James’s apparent ease during the hearing suggests a predetermined understanding of the case’s outcome. “JUST LIKE SHE KNOWS EXACTLY WHAT THE DECISION WILL BE!” Trump wrote.
The hearing in question pertained to James’s $250 million civil lawsuit against Trump and his business, alleging fraudulent inflation of asset values by Trump and the Trump Organization.
Trump’s post implies that James’s casual behavior in court indicates bias and unfairness in the proceedings. By highlighting her relaxed posture and apparent lack of open-mindedness, Trump suggests a predisposition against him.
Further, Trump raised concerns about the absence of cross-examination during the hearing, asserting, “NO JURY ALLOWED.” This led him to claim that the hearing was a “Witch Hunt,” a term he commonly employs to describe investigations into his conduct. He added that “Legal Scholars are ‘killing’ the A.G. and Judge for this Witch Hunt.”
Trump, who has previously attacked James on social media, often labels her as “racist,” a charge James vehemently denies, dismissing it as Trump “playing the race card.”
The former president concluded his post by asserting public anger over the perceived “HOAX” and claimed the “trial is RIGGED,” accusing the presiding judge of bias based on prior rulings against him.
Trump’s social media attacks underscore his longstanding opposition to investigations into his business dealings, which he contends are politically motivated. Conversely, James maintains the existence of “mountains of evidence” supporting allegations of years-long fraud by Trump, characterizing the case as “straightforward.” Whether Trump’s implication that James prematurely knows the hearing’s outcome holds true remains uncertain, with the casual posture potentially seen as coincidental by some, while Trump and his supporters interpret it as indicative of bias in New York’s legal system.
