Coral Springs Daily — A 52-year-old woman is in custody following a disturbing incident involving the abuse and captivity of her elderly mother. The elderly woman’s quick thinking led to her rescue after enduring a week of confinement and physical abuse.
According to an affidavit accessed by local media, the elderly woman’s clever actions played a pivotal role in guiding the police to their home and exposing the distressing situation. Julia M., the accused, now faces a felony charge of elder abuse, as detailed in court documents.
In early July, officers from the local police department responded to a welfare check at the residence after a concerned passerby spotted a sign in the window that read “HELP 911” and immediately dialed the emergency dispatcher. Upon arrival, first responders found Julia’s mother, who confirmed the allegations of being locked up and subjected to abuse by her daughter for the past week. Reports from WTVF describe some of the physical violence inflicted on the elderly mother, including arm twisting, slapping, and being struck with a tray. The responding officers also noted visible bruises on the victim’s arms and legs, providing evidence of the abuse. A neighbor interviewed by WSMV expressed astonishment, revealing that he had no prior knowledge of an elderly person living in the house.
“It’s surprising; it’s a quiet neighborhood, so we don’t really hear a lot going on. I didn’t actually even know there was an elderly person in there — we really don’t see the neighbors in that house too often,” the neighbor said, pointing to Julia’s home. He commended the elderly victim for her resourcefulness in escaping the alleged abuse, expressing both admiration for her courage and distress at the situation. “It’s good on her to do that,” he said. “It’s terrible she had to resort to doing something like that. I hope she gets the help that she needs, gets the resources she needs, and recovers from all of this; it’s terrible. At least she’s in appropriate hands now and can get what she needs.”
Following their arrival at the scene, the police arrested Julia, who was released the following day after posting a $6,000 bond. Court documents reveal that this isn’t Julia’s first run-in with the law. In April 2023, she was charged with misdemeanor domestic assault leading to bodily injury, though the details of that charge remain unclear. Records also show that Julia faced similar charges in 2006 and 2022, but both cases were ultimately dismissed.
