Outgoing Governor John Bel Edwards, a conservative Southern Democrat, has raised eyebrows by signing strict abortion bans and opposing recreational marijuana legalization. Despite speculation about him switching parties, Edwards dismisses the idea of joining the GOP, expressing his dissatisfaction with both major parties.
In a recent interview, Edwards acknowledged friction with the Democratic Party at the national level but asserted, “I have never been less inclined to be a Republican than today.” Despite his conservative stance on abortion, he aligns with Democratic economic policies, exemplified by his early adoption of Medicaid expansion, benefitting over 718,000 Louisianans.
Edwards criticizes the GOP, claiming it has lost its way and lacks core principles, attributing this to a personality cult around former President Donald Trump. In 2018, Trump personally urged Edwards to join the Republicans, an offer the governor declined. Trump later campaigned for Edwards’ GOP opponent in 2019, but Edwards secured reelection, emphasizing his belief in political centrism.
The governor argues for a return to the center, expressing concern that the current political system favors extremes and hinders progress. Edwards remains committed to his role as a conservative Democrat, navigating the complexities of a changing political landscape.
