Quiet Friday evening turned heartbreaking in Dodge County, Nebraska, as a small plane went down in the Platte River, claiming the lives of three men and prompting a large-scale emergency response.
Authorities confirmed the victims in the crash as 43-year-old Daniel Williams of Moundridge, Kansas; 50-year-old Jeff Bittinger of Fremont, Nebraska; and 48-year-old Randy Amrein, also of Fremont. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office released the identities Saturday afternoon, just hours after the fatal incident.
The crash occurred around 8:15 p.m. on Friday, just south of Fremont, when the aircraft suddenly plunged into the river. First responders from multiple agencies rushed to the scene, launching a full-scale operation involving both air and water rescue units.
Sgt. Brie Frank of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office noted that several local and regional agencies joined forces in the effort. Airboats were used to navigate the river’s waters, while a helicopter from the Omaha Police Department provided aerial surveillance of the crash site.
Among the agencies lending support were the Waterloo and Valley Fire Departments, the Nebraska State Patrol, and other emergency services from the surrounding areas.
As of now, the exact cause of the crash is still unknown. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have taken over the investigation and are working to piece together what led to the tragic event.
Officials are urging the public to stay away from the area as recovery and investigative operations continue.
