Former President Donald Trump has thrown his weight behind Trent Staggs, the current mayor of Riverton, Utah, in his bid for a U.S. Senate seat currently held by Senator Mitt Romney (R-Utah). Trump’s endorsement came via an April 27 post on Truth Social, where he praised Staggs as a staunch supporter of the “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) movement.

Staggs, who has served as the mayor of Riverton for six years, has received Trump’s backing due to his strong stance on several key issues. Trump highlighted Staggs’s experience as a successful entrepreneur and his track record in job creation, economic growth, and border security. Additionally, Trump emphasized Staggs’s commitment to supporting the military, veterans, and defending Second Amendment rights.

In response to Trump’s endorsement, Staggs expressed his gratitude, stating on X (formerly Twitter) that he was “honored to have the endorsement of Donald Trump!”

Romney announced in September that he would not seek reelection for his Senate seat in 2024. Staggs declared his intention to run for Romney’s seat in May 2023, criticizing Romney for his vote against Trump in the impeachment trial. Staggs accused Romney of prioritizing establishment interests over the needs of the American people.

At the recent Utah GOP convention, Staggs secured the party’s endorsement for the Senate seat, winning against four other candidates. He will now face off against former Utah House Speaker Brad Wilson and Representative John Curtis (R-Utah) in the GOP primary scheduled for June 25.

Staggs has garnered support not only from Trump but also from other prominent conservatives, including Representative Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, and Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.). Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, praised Staggs as a “sane conservative” who prioritizes representing Republicans over special interests.

Staggs emphasized the uniqueness of Utah’s GOP convention system, which promotes grassroots involvement in candidate selection. He pledged to push for tax reform, aiming to reduce the burden on the American taxpayer. Staggs also vowed to combat “wokeness” and strengthen immigration rules while advocating for energy independence.

If elected, Staggs intends to prioritize lowering taxes, defending conservative values, and promoting policies that benefit the people of Utah and the United States.
