President Donald Trump took a bizarre jab at Pete Buttigieg, the Democratic former transportation secretary, and his life with husband Chasten. However, in trying to mock Buttigieg, Trump ended up making the couple’s life sound almost… picturesque.
While boasting about a trade deal with the UK, Trump was asked about plans to update air traffic control software after a chaotic outage at Newark Liberty Airport. As expected, Trump shifted the focus to his familiar themes: falsely claiming the 2020 election was “rigged” and blaming Buttigieg for not updating the software sooner.
But then Trump veered off into uncharted territory—his criticism of Buttigieg’s personal life. “Buttigieg—who has no clue—you know, he drives to work on his bicycle with his, in all fairness, with his husband on the back… But he didn’t have a clue,” Trump said, his words dripping with disdain.
The comment, meant to be a dig, ended up showcasing a part of Buttigieg’s life that many would envy: a loving relationship and a peaceful, bike-riding routine. Trump even inadvertently admitted that it sounded like “a nice, loving relationship.”
Rather than being an insult, Trump’s attempt to mock the couple only highlighted how well Buttigieg’s life seems to be going. Maybe next time, Buttigieg will post a photo of himself and Chasten riding a tandem bike through a scenic route—just to rub it in a little more.
