Former President Donald Trump has escalated his criticism of Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, asserting that all charges against him and his co-defendants in the Georgia criminal racketeering case should be dropped. This follows accusations of a romantic involvement between Willis and special prosecutor Nathan Wade, who is handling the case, as reported by Newsweek on Wednesday.
Willis is leading the prosecution against Trump and 18 co-defendants, charged with 41 counts for their alleged attempt to overturn the 2020 election results in Georgia. Despite facing 13 charges, Trump has pleaded not guilty.
The controversy unfolded when Michael Roman, a former Trump campaign official and co-defendant, filed a court motion on Monday, alleging a romantic relationship between Willis and Wade. Roman seeks the dismissal of his seven charges and the disqualification of Willis and her staff from the case. It is essential to note that these allegations remain unverified at this time.
Trump, currently leading the GOP race, took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to demand the immediate dropping of all charges. In a post, he insisted on apologies and monetary damages for what he termed as “illegal and highly political persecution of innocent people.”
The 127-page document accompanying the motion claims, without substantiating evidence, that Wade utilized funds from the Trump case for vacations with Willis to various locations, including Napa Valley, California, Florida, and the Caribbean. It further alleges that the two shared a residence.
Additionally, the filing contends that both Willis and Wade profited substantially from the prosecution, with Wade reportedly receiving almost $654,000 in legal fees at the taxpayers’ expense. The motion asserts that Wade had two encounters with White House staff in 2022 and invoiced Fulton County for these meetings.
Trump, accusing Willis of hiring a romantic partner to prosecute him and benefiting financially from their relationship, shared a link on his social media platform questioning when the case would be dropped or if it should be dismissed due to these allegations.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution initially reported the story and quoted a district attorney’s office spokesperson, promising a response through appropriate court filings.
In the ongoing legal battle, Trump is seeking the dismissal of the Georgia case, asserting presidential immunity for White House actions. He employs a similar argument to challenge his federal election interference indictment while maintaining a not guilty plea.
