Former President Donald Trump drew a packed crowd at Fort Dodge High School’s gymnasium, where he underscored his contributions to Iowa, emphasizing his role in the state’s Republican presidential nomination and the $28 billion in aid to farmers during trade disputes with China.
During his hour-long speech, Trump focused on his financial support to farmers affected by trade policies, particularly tariffs on Chinese goods. He also engaged in political tit-for-tat, suggesting his influence on U.S. Sens. Chuck Grassley and Joni Ernst’s election wins but omitted mention of Gov. Kim Reynolds, who endorsed a rival.
Trump, leading in polls with 54% support among likely Republican caucusgoers, criticized Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, dismissing him as dead in the water. The former president also reiterated concerns about election integrity, claiming the 2020 election was rigged.
Notably, Trump received a standing ovation for his stance against transgender individuals in sports, vowing not to allow men to play in women’s sports. This stance resonated with the audience and echoed sentiments expressed by Iowa Rep. Mike Sexton and Rep. Bobby Kaufmann.
The rally showcased Trump’s multifaceted approach, blending economic achievements, political endorsements, and cultural stances. For supporters like vocal music teacher Jolene Messerly, Trump’s policies on immigration and border security outweighed concerns about social issues, making him their preferred presidential choice.
