Republican businessman Perry Johnson has officially halted his underdog bid for the presidency, attributing his lack of momentum in the race as a primary factor in his decision. This announcement follows his failure to qualify for the Republican National Committee’s (RNC) debates.
Reported by Breitbart on October 21, 2023, Johnson has accused the RNC of employing “authoritarian power” to bar him from the debates. The RNC, in response, contends that he did not meet the required polling and donor criteria.
Johnson emphasized the importance of allowing the American people, rather than the RNC leadership, to determine the next President of the United States. Expressing frustration at his exclusion from the debate stage, he concluded that suspending his campaign was the necessary course of action.
Notably, Johnson has not officially withdrawn from the presidential race but has instead suspended his campaign. He plans to maintain a small political team, leaving open the possibility of re-entering the race should the political landscape change.
Johnson’s departure marks the third Republican candidate to exit the primary race, dominated by former President Donald Trump’s substantial lead in early polls. Earlier this year, Miami Mayor Francis Suarez suspended his campaign in August, and former Texas congressman Will Hurd dropped out during the same month.
From the beginning, Johnson faced challenges in his campaign. He filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission after failing to qualify for the initial GOP presidential debate in August. Johnson argued that his exclusion stemmed not from insufficient polling and donor qualifications but from being perceived as a political outsider.
His bid for the presidency was not his inaugural foray into politics. Johnson was previously a leading GOP candidate for Michigan governor, although he and four other Republican contenders were disqualified due to invalid signatures.
Despite his setbacks, Johnson invested significantly in his campaign, airing an ad during the Super Bowl targeting Iowa voters, the first state in the GOP presidential primary. The ad emphasized his proposal to annually reduce federal spending by 2%. Johnson formally announced his presidential candidacy in early March after speaking at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference.
Johnson’s wealth is rooted in his founding of Michigan-based Perry Johnson Registrars Inc., a company specializing in certifying businesses’ compliance with industrial standards.
In his statement suspending his campaign, Johnson pledged his steadfast support for Republican candidates nationwide in the 2024 elections. Notably, he refrained from endorsing any of his fellow rivals in the presidential race. The RNC has yet to respond to Johnson’s allegations, leaving uncertainties about the impact of his departure on the Republican primary landscape.
