U.S. Attorney Ed Martin has launched “Operation Whirlwind”—a sweeping crackdown on violent political rhetoric that has put two high-profile Democrats under scrutiny. Martin is demanding answers from Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Rep. Robert Garcia after their past statements raised alarms about potential threats against public officials.
Martin, who oversees the District of Columbia, made it clear in an internal email that his mission is to protect federal workers from intimidation. “Free speech has limits, and threatening government workers crosses the line,” he wrote. “We will stop the storm of threats against officials at all levels.”
As part of this initiative, Martin has fired off letters to Schumer and Garcia, urging them to clarify their controversial remarks. According to documents published by The Washington Post, Garcia is under scrutiny for comments made during a CNN interview on February 12, 2025. When asked about ways to counteract Elon Musk—an appointed representative of President Donald Trump—Garcia reportedly declared, “What the American public wants is for us to bring actual weapons to this bar fight. This is an actual fight for democracy.”
Martin’s response was swift and direct: “This sounds to some like a threat to Mr. Musk… and government staff who work for him. Their concerns have led to this inquiry.”
Schumer, on the other hand, is being pressed over remarks made years ago. Martin’s office has repeatedly asked the Senate Minority Leader to clarify his 2020 statement targeting Supreme Court Justices Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh. At a rally outside the U.S. Capitol, Schumer warned, “I want to tell you Gorsuch. I want to tell you Kavanaugh. You have released the whirlwind and you will pay the price. You won’t know what hit you if you go forward with these awful decisions.”
Despite a response from Schumer’s office stating that his words were not meant as a threat, Martin has continued to push for further clarification, signaling that this probe is far from over.
In a separate action, Martin has also reached out to Musk, assuring him that his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) staffers would be protected from any threats or interference. “Let me assure you of this: we will pursue any and all legal action against anyone who impedes your work or threatens your people,” Martin wrote in a letter obtained by Newsweek.
