In a harrowing incident that unfolded in Ocala, Florida, 21-year-old Saul Garcia Macias is now facing a murder charge for the tragic death of his 17-year-old girlfriend, Sofia Lugo. The Marion County Sheriff’s Office reported that Garcia Macias allegedly shot and killed Lugo before fabricating an elaborate story about masked men invading his home to mislead both his mother and law enforcement.
Garcia Macias was apprehended on Wednesday and charged with one count of homicide, specifically dangerous depraved murder without premeditation, according to a news release from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded to a report of a suspicious death at a residence in Ocala on December 10, around 12:55 a.m. Upon arrival, they discovered Lugo’s lifeless body in her bedroom, the victim of a gunshot wound to her throat. Tragically, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Notably, Lugo bore a “freshly done” tattoo on her right arm that read “Saul,” as disclosed by the sheriff’s office.
Garcia Macias’ mother, residing in the same residence, informed deputies that she had not seen her son since discovering Lugo’s body. Initially attributing a mysterious “thump” in the night to her cat, she later admitted that Garcia Macias had awakened her, claiming masked men were responsible for his girlfriend’s demise.
Fleeing the scene, Garcia Macias left his mother to contact 911. She further revealed that her boyfriend, also present at the home, overheard Garcia Macias confessing to having done something to Lugo.
Prompting a 17-day manhunt, Garcia Macias finally contacted the sheriff’s office on December 27 from a local store, expressing a desire to speak with deputies. Claiming to be unaware of the reasons for the search, he asserted that he had been “lost in the woods” since the night of the murder, with no knowledge of the events surrounding Lugo’s death. According to his account, he heard a gunshot while in the bathroom, discovering Lugo’s lifeless body upon emerging. He asserted that fear drove him to flee the scene.
Taken into custody, Garcia Macias is currently held without bond at the Marion County Jail. The sheriff’s office indicates that the investigation remains ongoing, with the possibility of additional charges.
Friends and family of Sofia Lugo have established a GoFundMe page to assist with her funeral expenses. Describing her as a “beautiful soul” with a promising future, they mourn the loss of a smart young woman aspiring to become a nurse. Her memory will undoubtedly be cherished by many who knew and loved her.
